Indian Standard Codes Needed for Precast Industry

In an interview with Built Constructions, Mr. Mohan Kumar, Managing Director of Chennai-based Ra-Ni Precast insists to have standards for precast production.

Precast industry is emerging slowly but steadily, lots of precast structures have been developed in recent years, which will become reference for other builders or developers as many of them were monitoring this technology about the pros and cons. We are for sure believed that precast industry will lead the construction sector for the next two decades.

Our expertise in designing and detailing came through our experience and knowledge in this precast industry for the last two decades. Many of the detailing of precast building structures will be unique as it is also very difficult to find references in IS codes, therefore we are also using BS codes, hand books and code of practice used in some foreign countries. We request our Indian designers or professionals to accept the other country codes and practices used in precast industry, till our IS Codes is developed fully in all aspects.

There are hundreds of advantages of using precast concrete products in the building the structures over the conventional structures:

  • Saves time as precast products shall be cast well ahead of time
  • Quality of the products were very high as it is controlled in the factory environment
  • Durability of the structure is very high as higher grade of concrete and steel is used.
  • Precise dimensional accuracy
  • Timber formwork is been avoided almost 95%
  • Less manpower is used as most of the works is been mechanized
  • Better safety and environmental conditions
  • Schedules shall be planned and achieved most of the time.
  • No escalation of price as most of the project is completed in shorter duration and raw materials already included in the precast products.
  • Very less scaffolding / supporting structures is required
  • Block work & Plastering shall be avoided entirely
  • Steel usage shall be optimized
  • Weather condition will not affect the production of precast elements
  • No deadline for de-shuttering formworks at site
  • Precast is rated as Green Building

We offer Precast Design, Detailing, Production and Installation of precast products. We also undertake big projects on Turnkey basis where we will establish on site plants and execute the project exclusively.

Mr. Mohan Kumar
Managing Director, Ra-Ni Precast

Definitely, Sustainable Engineering is addressed in Precast buildings and important would be:

  • high durability as we are using higher grade of concrete, steel and high strength grouts
  • All the joints will be detailed carefully addressing the seismic requirements, water tightness.
  • Thermal comfort is ensured as the concrete were dense, and further it shall be enhanced by introducing insulation material.
  • Green Engineering is achieved by Waste reduction, material management, Pollution prevention and product enhancement.
